Draft Insider Tony Pauline writes that UCF QB Blake Bortles is a "clear-cut favorite" to be the Texans' pick at No. 1 overall.

Pauline believes Texans owner Bob McNair prefers Johnny Manziel, but Bortles is a "Bill O'Brien type of passer," and Houston seems likely to lock in on signal callers with the draft's top pick. Bortles has drawn media comparisons ranging from Jake Locker to Andrew Luck. In his latest mock draft, Pauline pencils in Bortles at No. 1, and Texas A&M LT Jake Matthews at No. 2 to St. Louis.

Draft insider Tony Pauline will be looking for a new line of work next year.  Likely involving the phrase "you want fries with that?"

If Bob McNair stated he'd want Bortles to be the #1 overall pick in his job interview, and the Texans still hired him, they'll get exactly what they deserve.

I just haven't seen any star power from the few games I saw Bortles play this year.  Maybe he'll develop into an elite QB, but to me he doesn't look like he's ready to start in the NFL.

Let me reiterate this: Bortles going high (possibly No. 1) isn't a media-creation. There are several around the NFL who love this kid

I hope he does. And JFF is available at 8. I really think Zimmer or Bowles ... With JFF and AP could be a Super Bowl ticket.

It would shock me if Bortles went #1.  I've been wrong about the draft many times before though.

Do they really love him that much or are they hyping him to throw other teams off the scent of the other players? I watched him play and he is good but still not as sold on him as others are. And who the hell is Tony Pauline?

A&M students called him "Johnny Football" and as he produced more and more ridiculous plays, he went to "Johnny Fvcking Football."

Agreed.  I haven't seen a star at all, and he looks like a 2-3 to me.  BUT, he does also possess the most raw ability to be an elite QB.  That may be what gets him taken at #1.  He reminds me of Jake Locker to a large extent.  Locker showed me everything I want in a franchise QB, except consistency. He possessed the cannon arm to fire lasers in there.  Good build, although lacking an inch or two in height.  Great athleticism.  But he was inaccurate at times, just as Bortles is.  I was higher on Locker, but in a bad situation in TN, and with his injuries we never have yet gotten to see everything he has to offer IMO.

I admit (again) that I gave zero attention to Bortles' games because he wasn't anywhere on the boards I was looking at during the season.  Still goofy how he just popped in there as a first rounder.  I watched the rest of the guys at the top as much as I could.  (I also admit that I continued to watch Mariota's games mainly if they coincided with another even after he said he was going back to Oregon.  I just like watching him play.)  Anyway, I mainly have just one game this year plus highlight videos to judge Bortles on, and I'm one of those that refuses to say much about a guy if that's the case.  All I can say is the little I've seen of his skills haven't said #1 overall.

Why would Texas need to throw people off with the first overall pick?

To possibly generate buzz that they're going after a QB and somebody who wants the top-rated QB (per Tony Pauline) better make them an offer they can't refuse.
